The Tibetan Plateau

Trekking through Upper Mustang is a journey of discovery, where every step unveils ancient monasteries, intricately carved caves, and traditional Tibetan villages frozen in time. Traverse the rugged terrain of the Tibetan plateau, enveloped by the towering peaks of the Himalayas, and immerse yourself in the serene beauty of this remote wilderness.

The Trek

Our meticulously crafted itinerary begins amidst the vibrant streets of Kathmandu, where you'll explore UNESCO World Heritage sites before journeying to the tranquil lakeside city of Pokhara. From Pokhara, a scenic flight over the Himalayas transports you to Jomson, the gateway to Upper Mustang.

Our 10 day trek traverses along the Kaligandaki river gorge and passes through the villages of Upper Mustang on the way to Lo Manthang.  Each village offers its own glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of Tibetan culture and tradition. Marvel at the many Buddhist gompas and stupas as you traverse this ancient kingdom.  Our favorite stop on the way is Chungsi Cave, believed to be the 13th century meditation site of Guru Rinpoche.

The Walled City

At the heart of Upper Mustang lies the fabled walled city of Lo Manthang, a time capsule preserving the traditions and architecture of centuries past. Typically we spend 2 days here to explore the monasteries, museums and the Raja Royal Palace where the king still performs his ceremonial duties as well as travel to Chosar Valley to visit Jhong Cave, a 5 story cave with more than 40 rooms, and Niphu gompa, a monastery built right into the cliff face.

We then make our way back to Kagbeni through Dhakmar and Ghiling, visiting Ghar Gompa along the way, an 8th century gompa, believed to be the oldest Tibetan monastery in the world.

The entire trek takes place on the Tibetan plateau, within the rain shadow of the Himalayas, ensuring normally clear skies and dry, cool weather for comfortable trekking conditions and stunning views of the Himalayan mountains to the south.
