Mount Kailash — known in Tibetan as Gang Rinpoche, "Precious Jewel of Snows" — is one of the world's most revered sacred destinations. For Hindus, it is the abode of Lord Shiva; for Buddhists, the dwelling of Chakrasamvara; for Jains, the site of Rishabhadeva's liberation; and for the indigenous Bon, the nine-story swastika mountain at the origin of their faith.
The pilgrimage involves a 53-kilometre circumambulation (Kora) around the sacred peak, believed to erase a lifetime of sins, cleanse the soul, and bring good fortune. Adjacent to Kailash lies Lake Manasarovar — the highest freshwater lake of its turquoise colour — where pilgrims take a holy dip and perform Puja and Hawan on its banks.
